As cochlear implantation developed in the UK, a major evaluation of the benefits and costs of this healthcare intervention, was undertaken by the MRC
In this study
- 97% of patients could identify some common environmental sounds
- 95% of patients identified more words correctly with their implant
- 70% of patients demonstrated improvements in the quality and intelligibility of their speech
- These outcomes were sustained 18 months after implantation
- Implantation significantly reduced the requirement for additional help and helpers
