Patient transfer

Guidance on transfer-in patients

The British Cochlear Implant Group aims to improve the hearing, communication and quality of life of people with hearing loss and their families. Cochlear implant centres in the UK typically provide assessment, surgery and lifelong follow-up care to their patients. This is usually funded by the NHS. Patients sometimes transfer their care between centres, as is their right to do.

Sometimes people with cochlear implants move to the UK from other countries or care models, where there may be different candidacy criteria and different provision of cochlear implants (for example bilateral implants for adults). It is our view that people who are entitled to receive NHS treatment should be eligible for follow-up care at UK cochlear implant centres in order to allow them to continue to obtain benefit from their cochlear implants.
