Cochlear implant sound processors are extremely expensive items, each costing thousands of pounds. You are not obliged to insure processors provided by the NHS, but some people choose to do so through their home insurance, in case they lose or accidentally damage them beyond repair. If that happens, some cochlear implant programmes may apply a charge to contribute towards the cost of the lost or damaged device or an administration charge for its replacement. There may also be a delay of some years to the next upgrade of the sound processor.
