Director of Auditory Implant Service

The University of Southampton Auditory Implant Service is looking for a Director.  This is an office-based, full-time position located on the Highfield Campus.

 To be considered, you will need:
  - Experience of successful and sustained management in an NHS Foundation Trust or a similar organisation
  - Experience of managing a significant service budget
  - Leadership and management experience
  - Experience of leading capacity planning and influencing the behaviours of external bodies
  - Previous involvement in health service development and reconfiguration
  - A postgraduate qualification and/or equivalent professional qualifications and managerial experience in a clinical service

Scottish Cochlear Implant Programme

An opportunity has arisen for a permanent Clinical Scientist as part of the Scottish Cochlear Implant Programme based in University Hospital Crosshouse.

What you will do:
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a registered clinical scientist to work within our busy, friendly, and dynamic multidisciplinary team, which provides a national cochlear implant service for profoundly deaf adults and children in Scotland. You will be based at our modern, well-established clinic at Crosshouse Hospital and at outreach clinics in specific locations in other parts of Scotland.

You will participate in the care of cochlear implant patients and will be involved in the development and application of innovative clinical measurement techniques. Cochlear implantation is a relatively new and rapidly evolving technique and there are excellent opportunities for professional development.

Knowledge, training and/or experience required to do the job:
You will have completed a degree in a Physical Science, Bioengineering or Audiology together with an MSc in either:

  • Medical Physics/ Clinical Engineering
  • an IPEM accredited integrated master’s degree in Bioengineering
  • Audiology
  • STP Neurosciences
  • Completion of the NHS Clinical Scientist Training Programme or the Academy of Healthcare Science certificate of equivalence

You will be registered with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC).

You will possess highly developed communication skills and be able to work closely with colleagues from a range of different professional groups and in a variety of settings.

Senior Rehabilitationist

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified and experienced specialist Teacher of the Deaf QToD/Educational Audiologist or a Speech and Language Therapist in the University of Southampton Auditory Implant Service (USAIS). This is a full time role but applications will be welcomed for those interested in part time or job share roles.

USAIS provides a regional service for deaf adults and children in the southern region of the UK. By joining our inclusive, multi-disciplinary team, you will have a unique opportunity to further your career by utilising your clinical skills within a University setting, allowing you to access up-to-date research in this field. You will be responsible for the specialised assessment of hearing-impaired adults and children for a range of auditory implants and devices, and will manage a caseload of children and adults, providing rehabilitation and support post-fitting. You will provide training, advice and support for local professionals regarding the optimal use of auditory implants. You will be based at our clinic on the Highfield campus but will also see children and adults in their education or home setting. The area covered for outreach visits could be across the region, but mostly West of Southampton.

You will be a qualified Teacher of the Deaf or Speech and Language Therapist with extensive post qualification experience across the age range. Experience of working with children and young people with auditory implants and assistive listening devices would be advantageous, however, appropriate training will be offered.   

Within the department, there are excellent opportunities for specialised working and individual areas of research. You will have the opportunity to be involved with teaching on the MSc and BSc Audiology courses run by the University. Attendance at conferences and training courses is encouraged and supported for continuing professional development. The Emmeline Team is friendly and dedicated towards the delivery of an excellent service for all our users, as well as constantly looking at better ways to provide a service. The Centre is purpose-built, located within Addenbrooke’s Hospital, in Cambridge.

Main duties of the job

Job role will include working within a multidisciplinary team, undertaking electrophysiological assessment, intraoperative implant testing and programming for adults and children with cochlear implants. You will participate in departmental projects, including staff training, audit and research.

Experience in electrophysiology and complex adult/paediatric audiology clinics is expected. Knowledge of cochlear implant programming is essential and a strong understanding of computer systems and software application is desirable. Knowledge in other hearing implant systems is preferable but not essential, as training will be provided.
